Hāwera school Te Paepae o Aotea is trialling Maestro, a smart platform developed by Lastmyle that optimises heat pump use to improve energy efficiency
In a first-of-its-kind installation for Taranaki, Hāwera High School Te Paepae o Aotea is demonstrating how smart technology can support the energy transition in schools—reducing emissions, cutting costs, and maintaining a comfortable learning environment.
As one of the largest schools in the region, Te Paepae o Aotea is now trialling Maestro, a smart platform developed by New Zealand company Lastmyle, that optimises heat pump use to improve energy efficiency. The platform has already demonstrated a 20% reduction in heating-related energy use and a 30% shift away from peak electricity demand, offering both environmental and financial benefits.
The project is part of the New Zealand Government’s broader programme to decarbonise state sector buildings by phasing out fossil-fuelled heating systems. The urgency for change increased in 2024, when gas suppliers began warning schools of potential supply challenges.
Maestro offers a seamless experience for teachers. Heat pumps can be used as normal, while the system learns classroom preferences and makes real-time adjustments without requiring any extra input. These cost savings can then be redirected to other areas within the school.
The project is the result of a successful collaboration between Ara Ake, the Ministry of Education, EECA, Lastmyle, and Te Paepae o Aotea. Ara Ake facilitated the agreement and helped secure funding through the Government’s decarbonisation programme. Importantly, the installation and trial are fully funded, with no cost to the school.
As an added benefit, Maestro can respond to signals from the electricity grid—coordinating heating across classrooms in a way that eases pressure on the network during peak times.
This trial highlights how smart, scalable innovation can make a real difference in the transition to a low-emissions future, while putting the needs of students and schools at the centre.
