Understanding the number of fossil fuel machines in homes, businesses, and farms across New Zealand which need to be electrified to meet our nation’s emissions targets.
As the New Zealand energy sector focuses on generating and supplying electricity - i.e. the supply-side, such as generation and infrastructure - it’s equally important to consider what it takes everyday New Zealanders to electrify their households, businesses and farms. This includes transitioning from petrol cars to electric vehicles, replacing gas hobs and water heating with induction stovetops and hot water heat pumps, switching petrol lawn mowers for plug-in ones, or adopting electric tractors.
To reach net zero emissions, there are likely only thousands of supply-side machines which will need replacing, whilst at the same time, we will need to replace millions of demand-side machines.
Ara Ake has partnered with Rewiring Aotearoa and EECA to develop the National Machine Count to understand the demand-side machines powering New Zealand.
The initiative surveys Kiwi homes, businesses and farms, integrating these finding with existing data to map national energy usage on a granular level. It will identify potential cost savings from switching fossil-fuel machines to electric alternatives and measure the emissions reductions possible through electrification.
The outcome of the Machine Count will:

Rewiring Aotearoa is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation working to build an abundant electrified future where every kiwi saves money on their energy bills and every community has the resilience to keep it's lights on and homes warm.
It is Rewiring’s view that the only practical way to succeed in the climate transition is to electrify millions of fossil fuel machines, coining the term “Electrify everything” as it will save our homes, farms, and small businesses thousands of dollars every year.
