Ara Ake is New Zealand's national energy innovation centre. Ara Ake launched in New Plymouth, Taranaki, in 2020 as a regionally-located, nationally-focused and globally relevant energy innovation centre.

The journey to decarbonise Aotearoa New Zealand is full of challenges, but Ara Ake is here to turn those challenges into opportunities. As New Zealand’s national energy innovation centre, we help innovators develop, test and bring new energy technologies to life.
We do this by connecting them with the right resources, knowledge and people, helping to transform ideas into reality. By working closely with a wide range of stakeholders across the energy sector, we help accelerate the commercialisation of innovative solutions that can drive New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions future.
Based in Taranaki, Ara Ake is all about helping to build a sustainable, resilient and fair energy future for New Zealand. Our mission is to drive the development and deployment of innovative energy technologies that support Aotearoa's decarbonisation efforts.
We take a ‘whole of energy systems’ approach, meaning we look at energy solutions in the bigger picture and work to connect New Zealand’s capabilities with global opportunities. This way, we can ensure that innovation leads to real-world impact - economically, socially, culturally and environmentally.
We offer a range of tailored services to help innovators and businesses bring their ideas to market, including:

Our name, Ara Ake, is formed from two separate words, that come together to represent new pathways to be explored on a continuous journey forward. Onwards and upwards!
When thinking about a name for New Zealand’s future energy development company, it needed to align with its future potential and be able to expand its meaning as the company grows and evolves over time.
Ara Ake’s true depth of meaning allows us to speak to a much greater idea, connecting with people through a shared agenda that is bigger than just the Ara Ake organisation.
